The Cincinnati Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in partnership with the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation presents an architectural design competition.

INVITATION

In an era of economic uncertainty and high unemployment, our public discourse finds us searching for new and old paradigms to embody. How are we to build a sustainable economy from the current state of affairs? Many look towards new trends in localized industrial production combined with an increased interest in urban living and the customization from CNC or robotic manufacturing as indicators of this economy’s shape and tenor. Should these prove as essential building blocks of a near future industry then how might the built environment anticipate this need?

LIVE·MAKE Industrial Arts Center Cincinnati calls for architectural proposals for a membership based facility that will feature private residences, maker-in-residence studios, light industrial studios and an open workshop that will help shape a new economic opportunity for the neighborhood. The proposed site includes a building and undeveloped land. It is located in a neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio recently designated as an Urban Mix zoning area in order to encourage a return of manufacturing and living. This center will be a place for members to take advantage of evolving tools and modes of production from the past and present.

Proposals should realize the history of innovation and civic engagement of the surrounding community as inspiration for the next generation to develop innovative ways of making that can impact the neighborhood’s future. The Industrial Arts Center Cincinnati fits into the neighborhood’s master plan and could serve as a business incubator, a community magnet and a production center as other nearby sites are developed. The main objective is a contemporary architectural solution that engages the site’s historic fabric and restores some of the original living and making characteristics of the community.

KEY THEMES

Design for Innovation
The entrants should consider the future of evolution of tools and how this facility might adapt to these changes. This will require uniquely designed spaces that allow users to take advantage of available tools to modify the space.
Living While Making
In defining the total number of housing units each proposal will have the opportunity to establish the potential impact these units will have on the overall program. The final design of each individual residential unit should align with the goals of the Industrial Arts Center and neighborhood.
Preservation, Renovation, Demolition
Over-the-Rhine’s architecture is cherished for its history, but what is the future of the district’s history regarding architecture built today? Entrants should carefully choose how to engage a historical neighborhood and the existing building while embracing a new architectural language.
Mixed-Use Confrontation
Disparate programs of living and making, which the new Urban Mix zoning encourages, will interact directly on the site. These programs should have a consistent interaction and not be isolated from one another.
Sustainable Micro-Environment
In addition to the re-use of the existing building, entrants should make environmentally conscious decisions that embody the Living Building Challenge standard.
