Antti Ahlava is a partner in MOD Architects Ltd., Senior Lecturer in
Urban Design at Helsinki Univ. of Technology and Visiting Professor in
Architectural Design at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. He has
the the degrees of Master of Architecture (HUT 1996) and Doctor of Arts
(diss. “Architecture in Consumer Society”, Helsinki Univ. of Arts and
Design 2002). Ahlava has published widely and lectured in many
countries. He has won prices in architectural competitions and taken
part in the design of numerous realised projects in Finland, Sweden and
France, including EcoLogis Experimental House, Paris; Institute of Art
and Communication in Helsinki; and Haila Ecological Library, Loppi.
Ahlava’s dissertation takes up a unique issue in architectural
discourse. He examines modern architecture, whose roots are inextricably
linked with the consumer society, and also the strategies of architects
who seek to respond to changes in this society. He draws a parallel
between architecture and the moving image, the typical artform of the
consumer society.
