Ph.D Pasi Mäenpää: Consumerism and Public Space

How the city functions as the stage for consumption and how consumption
produces space, are the main questions

Ph.D Pasi Mäenpää is a researcher at the Department of Sociology,
University of Helsinki. His research areas are urban sociology and
sociology of consumption – including questions of urban public space,
spaces of consumption, cell phone user cultures, and emerging mobile
internet, as well as urban politics and urban planning. He is a
co-editor of a book on the cultural history of 20th century Finland
(Suomen kulttuurihistoria 4: Koti, kylä, kaupunki).
His doctoral thesis ‘Narcissus in City: a study of a consumer-
urbanite and urban public space’ was published in April 2005 (in Finnish).
The lecture belongs to the Architecture and the Contemporary City series.
