The organizers have announced the winners of an open international architectural competition of reconstruction of St Paul's church and planning Vabaduse Square in Rakvere, Estonia.
The name card envelopes were opened and winners of the international architectural competition of Vabaduse Square and St Paul’s church in Rakvere, Estonia, were announced on 7. September 2009 at the ceremony that took place at the Virumaa Museums gallery in Rakvere.
The jury of the international architectural competition of Vabaduse Square and St Paul’s church in Rakvere, Estonia, decided to award the following contestants:
The first prize was given to the competition entry named tintin’na:buli, authors of which are Kristiina Aasvee, Kristiina Hussar and Anne Kose from OÜ Celander Projekt.
The second prize was given to the competition entry named Hortus Musicus, authors of which are Emil Urbel and Aleksander Zverev from Emil Urbel OÜ.
The third prize was given to the entry named Kolmnurkne, authors of which are Eric Martin, Neil Dusheiko, Nikolai Delvendahl from DMD Architects.
The purchase prize went to the entry called Lighthouse, authors of which are Sir Peter Cook, Gavin Robotham, Guadalupe Hernandez Lorenzo and Carlos Ruiz Jimenez from Crab Studio.
An open international architectural competition of reconstruction of St Paul's church and planning Vabaduse Square in Rakvere, Estonia, was held 30.03 - 9.07.2009 by the City of Rakvere. There were 136 timely submitted entries from 29 different countries.
An exhibition of the best and most interesting entries will be on at the Virumaa Museums gallery in Rakvere, Estonia, until 21. September 2009. In October 2009, the exhibition will also be on at the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn, Estonia.
The City of Rakvere plans to transform the church building, which is currently used as a sports venue, into the Arvo Pärt Hall. An Estonian architect, Alar Kotli designed the St Paul’s church as a church that would symbolize Estonia’s freedom. The church was almost completed and consecrated just two days before Estonia was deprived of its freedom in June 1940. Since 1950s the church building has been used as a sports venue.
