Last night the ceremony of the annual awards in the field of Estonian Architecture for 2016 took place at NO99 theatre. The Estonian Cultural Endowment Architecture Foundation Grand Prix was awarded to the restoration project of St Paul’s Church in Tartu by Finnish architects Merja Nieminen, Kari Järvinen and Markku Norsi.

“The jury’s decision to recognise St Paul’s Church in Tartu was unanimous. The reason behind the success of the project relies in the architects’ deep knowledge of Eliel Saarinen’s work, their great respect towards the historic material, while being capable of bringing a contemporary approach to the process,” said Eero Jürgenson, the chairman of the Architecture Foundation of the Estonian Cultural Endowment. “The extent of research and their detail-oriented approach is also remarkable. The team executed and developed many of Saarinen’s ideas that were never realised in the tumultuous period of 1917–1919, when the church was built. With the opening of the cathedral, the city of Tartu has gained a new concert hall with wonderful acoustics. Opening and incorporating the underground space of the church allows people to experience the harmony between the magnificent fieldstone and brick structures. The solution as a whole is significant to our culture, it is the rebirth of a dignified building with its thoroughly composed interiors.”
The annual award of the Estonian Association of Architects, presented in collaboration with Merko Ehitus, was given to the Pärnu Beach Stadium. The project is designed by Jan Skolimowski and Peeter Loo (KAMP Architects), with contributions from Anton Andres. The winner was decided by the independent highly recognised Spanish architect Fuensanta Nieto.

“The most noteworthy characteristic of the Pärnu Beach Stadium is its clear and strong form, where architecture and construction fuse together into a wholesome entity. This is architecture where aesthetics are directly derived from function,” said Katrin Koov, the chairman of the Estonian Association of Architects. “The building is in active dialogue with a multifaceted environment – on the one hand, its appearance is dominated by the boldly protruding canopy, on the other, the beach park is framed by a modest facade. I imagine it must have been a really difficult choice to make, as almost all of the finalists were equally strong, each in their own category.”
The largest number of awards was won by KAMP Architects – altogether recognised in three different categories. In addition to the annual award of the Association of the Estonian Architects, KAMP also received the interior architecture award from the Estonian Cultural Endowment for two of their projects and the Estonian Association of Interior Architects’ award for best office for the interior of the offices of Lenne, designed by Jan Skolimowski in collaboration with Maie Raud.

“With the offices for Lenne, it is a space within a space kind of solution. An old factory building was converted into offices for a children’s clothing company,” explained Anja Dirks, a jury member for the Association of the Estonian Interior Architects. “This fascinating solution features areas with various character, a kind of a courtyard with trees among others. It is like a game of hide and seek, it’s private and open for all, featuring all sorts of contrasts. A high level of knowhow and execution has also been incorporated. The clean and almost simple execution keeps the whole in balance. It is high quality interior architecture.”
The Achievement of the Year in Estonian Landscape Architecture prize was awarded to landscape architecture magazine ÕU, produced by Anna-Liisa Unt, Merle Karro-Kalberg and Karin Bachmann.
“The landscape architecture magazine ÕU has been introducing topical themes to their readers since 2009. It is remarkable how the editors have been publishing the magazine as volunteers, yet been really consistent with it and continually raising the quality over the years,” said Valdeko Lukken, the chairman of the board of the Estonian Landscape Architects' Union. “This award is a recognition to the team at the magazine, editorial staff, writers and all landscape architects, who contributed to make this magazine possible seven years ago.”
